As I am sending out all of these Christmas cards I was wondering if it's a good idea to send one to my ex boyfriend's parents. We dated for almost two years and I had a great relationship with his parents and they liked me a lot. They were both genuine, nice, down-to-earth, old fashioned people that I enjoyed quite a bit. They hosted me at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and many other occasions and I kind of want to just send a card with a simple message saying thank you and wishing them happy holidays. Nothing more, nothing too emotional or anything; just pure kindness. And I'm not expecting anything in return.

Try to think of it as a difference in values. Certain people value money in their own way. What usually happens in my experience is that people marry and merge their bank accounts. Since they value money differently, a frugal man is slighted when his wife spends his money. Likewise, imagine working and handing over your entire paycheck over to your frugal spouse. There's plenty of room for resentment.

My concern is that he has put up these foundational boundaries that he seems adamant that he will ever be unwilling to move. I respect boundaries and I don't expect to know everything about him or involve him in every part of my life, either. To me, it seems relationships are about growing with someone, figuring out if you can or want to invest emotionally, open up, trust them, etc. If the result of our continuing to be involved ends up being that he doesn't feel he trusts me or wants to open up to me, so be it, but I find it odd and daunting that he thinks he will continue to hold onto his boundaries throughout the entire relationship. I don't expect him to neccesarily trust or open up to me, but I think I might expect that he is open to the idea of seeing if he can trust or open up to me rather than knowing from the beginning he never will.

Most of us are like that -- we want that closure before chugging full steam ahead in a relationship, so the fact that he's contacted her isn't all that unusual. However, if he's being secretive about meeting her, or doesn't want the two of you to meet, chances are, he's not looking for closure with his ex, but possibly looking for a way to sustain the relationship they once had.
