Hmmm, I have mixed feelings on setting the parameters by saying something upfront. That's because I find guys who do that a little too jarring for my personality and there's a job interview, sterile quality to it. The harder but easier part is knowing your standards and just operating with them in every relationship. They are true to you and who you are. That's why people without firm standards are not as compelling but it conveys that you are not entirely comfortable or know who you are. You adjust to get what you want.
